Barcode Formats Explained

Depending on the industry and specific use-case, the barcode formats used differ a lot.
Here is a quick glimpse at all popular barcode formats and their usage.

CODE128: A high-density linear barcode. It includes Code 128A, Code 128B and Code 128C as well.
CODE 128A: Code 128A supports uppercase letters, numeric digits, and control characters.
Code 128B: Supports uppercase and lowercase letters, numeric digits, and special characters.
Code 128C: Code 128C encodes pairs of numeric digits
EAN-13: A 13-digit barcode, mainly identifies retail products worldwide.
EAN-8: An 8-digit barcode for smaller packages.
EAN-5: A 5 digit supplemental barcode used along with EAN-13 for suggesting retail prices.
